γ-Aminobutyric acid is the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter in the developmentally mature mammalian central nervous system. Its principal role is reducing neuronal excitability throughout the nervous system. It plays an important role in energy metabolism and can activate glucose metabolism in the brain, promote the biosynthesis of acetylcholine, reduce blood ammonia, restore brain cell function, and enhance the activity of glucose phosphatase.
